CHIP Enrollment

How does Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) enrollment work?

All Medicaid beneficiaries who are in the categories of eligibility will receive an enrollment packet in the mail that will explain the program in more detail.

Beneficiaries may join the coordinated care organizations (CCOs) of their choice, either UnitedHealthcare Community Plan or Magnolia Health. If Medicaid does not get an answer from the beneficiary within 30 days about choosing a plan after receiving the initial letter, the beneficiary will be assigned to one of the health plans.

A Medicaid beneficiary has 90 days to either change to the other health plan, or stay in the program that their currently in.

If the form is not completed and returned, the beneficiary is automatically assigned to one of the plans but they will have 90 days to switch plans. If they don’t, any changes will have to wait until the annual open enrollment period in October, for an effective date of January 1, similar to the process with any other insurance provider.
